Cabinet today welcomed the outcome of the Growth and Development Summit, and congratulated all the sectors represented in National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) for the manner in which the issues on the agenda were dealt with. The GDS agreement, which identified many concrete activities to help speed up the rate of investment and job-creation, is an important milestone in creating national consensus among South Africans on the critical challenges of economic growth and development.

Cabinet today noted the progress that was being made in the intensive negotiations leading up to the Growth and Development Summit which will be held on 7 June 2003. As the discussions among the NEDLAC partners show, the Summit has the potential to initiate the forging of a People's Contract for Growth and Development, and to identify concrete immediate projects that will speed up the rate of investment and job-creation.

Cabinet was today briefed on the programme for the celebration of May 25, Africa Day, which this year marks the 40th anniversary of the formation of the Organisation of African Unity. In addition to special events prior to Africa Day, for the youth, the multi-disciplinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) cultural programme and a Presidential banquet on the eve of Africa Day, there will be a mass celebration on Sunday, 25 May, at the Johannesburg Stadium in Gauteng.

Cabinet today welcomed the unfolding Imbizo Focus Week programme, with a total of about 350 scheduled events for this week alone. It also noted preparations for the President's imbizo in the Northwest Province during the third week of April.

At its regular meeting today, Cabinet welcomed the new Minister of Housing Bridgette Mabandla, and it also noted with appreciation the presence of Minister Dullah Omar who is undergoing treatment.

At its meeting today, Cabinet noted a report on the initiatives to improve service delivery in line with the objectives of the White Paper on Transforming Public Service Delivery. The meeting agreed that all Departments would publish, in their Annual Reports, service delivery standards and the extent to which these have been met.

Cabinet today confirmed decisions of its January lekgotla which set out the programme of government for the coming year and beyond. These decisions will be articulated in the President's State of the Nation Address, the briefings by various Ministers and the Budget Speech by the Minister of Finance during the course of this month.

The Cabinet lekgotla, which started on Wednesday, 22 January, ended today. It was attended by the President, Deputy President, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Directors-General as well as advisors and other staff from The Presidency.

The objective of the lekgotla was to review progress in the implementation of government's programmes, including the public commitments made by the President in the State of the Nation Address in February last year.

Cabinet yesterday (7 December 2005) held its last meeting of the year, and it wished all South Africans a restful festive season and a productive New Year. Government calls on all South Africans to exercise care on the roads especially during the holiday season, and heed the message for all of us to Arrive Alive.

The meeting welcomed the growing participation and awareness among South Africans with regard to the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse.
