Government has noted and is concerned with the amount of violence, threats and intimidation that is currently taking place in our country, particularly in the mining sector. The Ministers responsible for the security of the country have met and reflected on the situation that is prevailing in the country currently. These acts of violence and intimidation clearly undermine government efforts of ensuring economic and security stability.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), which is chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, is today meeting the leadership of Cosatu as part of stakeholder consultations on the GFIP. This is a follow-up to the meeting held in July.

1. Decisions emanating from the work of clusters/line departments

1.1 Lifting of the moratorium on the acceptance and processing of applications to explore for shale gas 

Cabinet approved the report on shale gas exploration submitted by Minister of Mineral Resources from the technical task team convened last year. This is after the department imposed a moratorium on applications for exploration for shale gas in the Karoo.
