Cabinet noted that at least 748 000 grade 12 learners began sitting for their matriculation examinations on the 10th October around the country. Cabinet was pleased to note that the exams were proceeding well with no incidents of any kind reported. We would like to take the opportunity to wish all our learners the best of luck and hope that their hard work will be rewarded with good results.

Cabinet received reports from Cabinet Committees on implementation of the Programme of Action, and noted the progress made over the past two months. Ministers will brief the media on implementation from 26-28 September and the government website will be updated accordingly. The cluster briefings will be followed by a briefing on HIV and AIDS by the Minister of Health at a date to be announced.

Cabinet held its final meeting of the year in Pretoria yesterday, 6th December 2006.
Cabinet was briefed on plans for a campaign to address challenges of safety during the holiday period. Increased risky behaviour during this time regularly causes unnecessary fatalities and injuries from road accidents, violent crime, substance abuse, suicide and drowning. The aim of this campaign is to promote more responsible and caring behaviour during this period and throughout the year.

At its bi-weekly meeting in Cape Town yesterday, Cabinet was briefed on the implementation of the Programme of Action. The next round of media briefings on the Programme of Action will be held during the week of 26 September 2006.

At its meeting yesterday Cabinet approved, in principle, the Anti-crime Campaign as proposed by Business against Crime and agreed that relevant departments should participate actively in the campaign. The proposed Campaign seeks to mobilize all South Africans to join hands with SAPS in the fight against crime and to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system. The campaign will be discussed further at the meeting of the Presidential Big Business Working Group tomorrow in Cape Town.

Cabinet met at the Union Buildings, before a brief recess.
Cabinet finalised the two-monthly reports from Cabinet Committees on implementation of Government's Programme of Action. The media will be briefed on progress in the POA during the week beginning 2 July 2006 and the Programme of Action on the government website will be updated.

Cabinet held its ordinary meeting on 26 July 2006, immediately before the mid- year July Lekgotla which concludes on Friday 28 July 2006. President Thabo Mbeki will brief the media on the outcomes of the Lekgotla on Sunday 30 July at 14h00 at the Union Buildings.
