Cabinet held its ordinary meeting in Cape Town on the 8th of August 2012.

1.1 Executive outreach

Cabinet noted that President Jacob Zuma will on 10 August visit Sweetwaters informal settlement as part of the Presidential Monitoring Programme.

Cabinet also noted that Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe will on 11 August visit the town of Douglas (Siyancuma Municipality) as part of the War on Poverty campaign. The focus of the visit will be on youth unemployment and related challenges.

1.1 International relations

1.1.1 President Jacob Zuma will undertake an official visit to Jamaica from  4-6 August 2012 to enhance bilateral relations. The visit, which includes the 50th anniversary celebrations of Jamaica’s independence, will serve to recognise the role Jamaica has played during South Africa’s struggle for liberation, as well as to celebrate Jamaica’s achievements as an independent, stable constitutional democracy.

Government has noted that recent media coverage on road traffic fines regarding state vehicles have indicated a lack of understanding of the National Road Traffic Act No. 93 of 1996.

The Act clearly explains the transgression of traffic laws, and that certain drivers may exceed the general speed limit.

The South African women national soccer team, Banyana Banyana will kickstart the Olympic games programme in London tonight when they play against Sweden at 19h45 South African time. The Game will be broadcast live on SABC and Supersport Channels.

Government calls upon all South Africans to rally behind our women national team by watching the game and flying the SA flags high to show their support.

Government and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) met in Johannesburg today, 20 July 2012, to discuss possible solutions to servicing debt associated with the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP).

The meeting at Cosatu House in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, was part of ongoing stakeholder consultation by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the GFIP, chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

As part of the ongoing stakeholder engagement process of the Inter Ministerial Committee (IMC) on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, led by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, on Thursday, 19 July 2012, a technical task team engagement was held with representatives of stakeholders at the Union Buildings.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), which is chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, will meet with COSATU as part of stakeholder consultations on the GFIP.

1.1 Celebration

Yesterday marked former President Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday, which is also internationally recognised with the United Nations having declared 18 July (since November 2009) ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’.

Cabinet wished Madiba a happy birthday and called on all South Africans to spend at least 67 minutes doing good work in their communities.

Government joins all South Africans and the international community in wishing our Founding President Nelson Mandela a happy 94^th birthday, and in celebrating his life and legacy.

Madiba is special to South Africa in many ways, having dedicated his entire adult life to the relentless fight for freedom, democracy, peace and stability in our country.

As the first President of a democratic South Africa, Nelson Mandela immediately led the nation on a path of unity, transformation, forgiveness and reconciliation.
