At its ordinary meeting held yesterday, 11 May 2005, Cabinet noted the initiation by the President of the new phase of the imbizo programme, focussing on deepening democracy and improving service delivery in municipalities. Special attention in this programme will be paid to municipalities which have been identified for assistance through Project Consolidate. The programme will also involve the Deputy President and other members of the Executive from national and provincial governments.

At its meeting today, Cabinet noted the set of detailed decisions emerging from the Cabinet lekgotla, the broad framework of which informed the content of the State of the Nation Address as well as the on-going briefings being conducted by Clusters of Ministers during Parliamentary Briefing Week.

Cabinet yesterday (2 February 2005) received a progress report on, including a broad outline of the findings of, the research by Statistics South Africa into trends in mortality between 1997 and 2001. The meeting noted the report, and it was informed that Statistics SA would release the detailed findings to the public in the coming weeks, once the project has been completed. Government will examine the implications of these data on policy when the detailed findings are made available.

Cabinet held its annual January lekgotla from Wednesday 19 to Friday 21 January. The lekgotla examined various elements of government policy as well as matters pertaining to the implementation of the Programme of Action announced by the President in May 2004.
