Cabinet today received an interim report on investigations into pricing behaviour in the South African food and agricultural sector, dealing with such matters as maize futures contracts, degree of competitiveness in the food supply chain and consumer activism in our country.

Overview

The Cabinet held its mid-year lekgotla from 21 to 23 July 2002 to review progress in the implementation of the programme for the year, plan for the next Medium-term Expenditure Framework period, and reflect on long-term challenges.

Cabinet today examined developments surrounding legislation on crossing the floor by public representatives, and it reaffirmed government’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the Constitution providing for Parliament to pass such legislation. It noted that failure to address major shifts in political alignments between elections could impact negatively on democratic governance, as shown in the Western Cape Province and a number of municipalities.

The Cabinet meeting today was opened with the observation of a minute of silence in memory of Peter Mokaba who passed away last Sunday, and in recognition of the role he played in the struggle for freedom and as Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. Cabinet reiterated the Government’s heartfelt condolences to Mokaba’s family.
