Cabinet held its lekgotla on 17, 18 and 19 January to finalise the programme of government for the year 2000. This was followed by an ordinary Cabinet meeting on 19 January.
The lekgotla reviewed the implementation of the programme that the President announced in his speech to Parliament on 25 June 1999 as well as the challenges for the coming year. These include:

Cabinet today started with a moment of silence in honour of those who perished in the terrorist attacks in the USA, and in memory of the late Govan Mbeki.
5 December 2001
At its meeting today, Cabinet noted the formation of a new administration in the Western Cape, and welcomed the fact that this would strengthen co-operative governance across the country.
The meeting considered and approved a recommendation for the disposal of Transnet’s 51% stake in Air Chefs (Pty) Ltd, with 10% allocated to the National Empowerment Fund, 20% reserved for Black Economic Empowerment and 21% to a Strategic Equity Partner.

Cabinet was briefed today on the Parliamentary programme for the coming period, including the provisional date for the State of the Nation Address on 8 February 2002. The State of the Nation Address will coincide with the period of the middle of the term of the current government.
24 October 2001
Cabinet today received a briefing on developments in Burundi and progress towards the implementation of agreements to bring about peace and stability in that country. Cabinet reiterated the commitment of South Africa to assist in the implementation of these agreements, including a contribution to a multi-national VIP Protection Force.

Cabinet was today briefed on negotiations regarding salaries and conditions of service of public servants. The meeting welcomed progress that had been made in these negotiations, including the signing of the agreement by some of the unions.
22 August 2001
At its meeting today Cabinet approved amendments to labour legislation (Labour Relations and Basic Conditions of Employment Bills) after a protracted process of negotiations with business and labour partners. The details of these amendments can be found in the government website, www.gov.za.

Cabinet today received a report on preparations for the World Conference Against Racism, in particular on the campaign for the Torches of Tolerance by municipalities on 21 August, security-related matters and members of the government delegation to the Conference, which will be led by President Thabo Mbeki.

Following its lekgotla earlier this week, Cabinet held a brief ordinary meeting on Wednesday evening (25 July 2001).
The meeting adopted a plan for the re-organisation of Technical Colleges to respond to the human resource needs of the country. This will include the merger of a number of these colleges into Further Education Training (FET) Colleges under the relevant Act. However, no sites of teaching and learning will be closed in this process.
