Cabinet today received a report of the Task Team headed by the Deputy President dealing with the Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (ASGI-SA).

Cabinet was today briefed on the work being done by the Task Team led by the Deputy President with regard to issues of speeding up economic growth and job creation. A broad framework on the approach to this issue has been prepared, and detailed submissions from relevant departments and provinces are being processed with the aim of tabling a report at the next Cabinet meeting.

Cabinet today received reports from various Clusters on progress in the implementation of government's Programme of Action. This is in line with the two-monthly reporting cycle to Cabinet, which will be followed during the course of next week by media briefings conducted by relevant Ministers.

At its meeting today, Cabinet agreed in principle to a strategy for the recapitalisation of public schools, particularly in those serving the poorest communities. The focus of this programme will also be on targeted development of teachers to ensure provision of better quality. Details of this programme, including possible funding mechanisms, are still to be finalised and the budgetary implications will be handled through the normal budgeting process.

Cabinet held its ordinary meeting on Tuesday, 19 July, followed by a three-day lekgotla which ended on Thursday afternoon. President Thabo Mbeki will brief the media on the decisions of the lekgotla on Sunday, 24 July.

President Thabo Mbeki today informed Cabinet of his decision to appoint Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as Deputy President of the Republic. The President has further appointed Ms Lindiwe Hendricks as Minister of Minerals and Energy, as well as two Deputy Ministers in Trade and Industry: Mr Rob Davies and Ms Elizabeth Thabethe.

At its ordinary meeting held yesterday, 11 May 2005, Cabinet noted the initiation by the President of the new phase of the imbizo programme, focussing on deepening democracy and improving service delivery in municipalities. Special attention in this programme will be paid to municipalities which have been identified for assistance through Project Consolidate. The programme will also involve the Deputy President and other members of the Executive from national and provincial governments.
