Media briefing on COVID-19 level 1 lockdown regulations: 18 Sept

Following the address to the nation by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday, 16 September 2020, on progress in the national effort to contain the Covid-19 pandemic;  Ministers who serve in the National Coronavirus Command Council will brief the media on the regulations relating to the COVID-19 Level 1 restrictions.

The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will lead the briefing as follows:

Funeral arrangements for the Special Official Funeral of the late Advocate George Bizos

Government informs South Africans and the world on the details pertaining to the Special Official Funeral of the late human rights lawyer and social activist Advocate George Bizos. 

Advocate George Bizos passed away at the age of 92 in the afternoon of Wednesday, 09 September 2020.  President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared that he will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 1.

1.        Update on the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) 

1.1.    Cabinet welcomes the drop in the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks and the improved recovery rate that has increased to 87 percent. The number of people requiring admission in our hospitals and the demand for COVID-19 tests have also dropped.

Engaging in lawlessness is not the way to resolve conflict

Government has noted the public outrage following the Clicks advertisement where black hair is portrayed as “dry and damaged”. Whilst we are equally disturbed by the crude racist display by the advertisement in question, the acts of lawlessness of vandalizing and burning down Clicks stores that have been reported today are concerning and go against the spirit of peace and respect for human rights that has shaped this country since the dawn of democracy.  Engaging in lawless behavior is not a responsible way to resolve conflict.

Security Cluster hosts Virtual Dialogue on gender-based violence and femicide: 31 Aug

Under the theme “Improving access to justice for the victims and survivors of GBV and Femicide” Ministers who form part of the Security Cluster will address issues relating to the capacity of the criminal justice system to combating GBVF.

The dialogue closes the 2020 Women’s Month programme and is part of the Justice Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster’s effort to fight the scourge of GBVF.
