The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, will host a media briefing on plans for the reopening of the Post School Education and Training Institutions, the developments and contribution of Science and Innovation in the fight against COVID 19.

The media briefing follows the special Cabinet meeting which was held on Thursday, 14 January 2021.

Government informs South Africans on the details pertaining to the Special Official Funeral of the His Majesty King Victor Thulare of the BaPedi Kingdom (Kgoshikgolo Thulare).

King Thulare passed away at the age of 40 on Wednesday, 06 January 2021,

He is the son of the late King Rhyne Thulare and was officially recognised by President Cyril Ramaphosa as King of the BaPedi in 2020.

President Ramaphosa has declared that he will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 1.

Government is deeply saddened by the passing of Ms Dolly Mokgatle, the Executive Director and co-founder of Peotona Group Holdings. She was an established business leader who held various leadership positions within several of South Africa's state-owned enterprises and the private sector.

Government is deeply saddened by the passing of former Deputy Minister of Defence, Mluleki Editor George and conveys its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the nation. Mr George passed on yesterday, 5 January 2020. He served the country as the Deputy Defence Minister with distinction from 29 April 2004 until 25 September 2008. He was a member of parliament in the National Assembly from 1994 until September 2008.

Statement on the virtual Special Cabinet Meeting of Wednesday, 9 December 2020

A virtual Special Cabinet Meeting was held yesterday Wednesday, 9 December 2020, to deliberate on an appointment in the Department of Tourism. Cabinet approved the appointment subject to the verification of qualifications and the relevant clearances.

Ms Mirriam Mmaditonki Setwaba was appointed Deputy Director-General: Tourism Sector Support Services at the Department of Tourism.

A. Issues In The Environment

1. Increase in Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) infections
1.1. Cabinet has expressed extreme concern about the spike in the number of new COVID-19 infections in the Eastern Cape and parts of the Western Cape. The rise in infections has been attributed to, among other factors, non-adherence to COVID-19 prevention protocols and Alert Level 1 regulations.
