South Africa celebrates Africa Day with pride

Africa Day 2016 marks 53 years since the formation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963 and the African Union in 2002. South Africa joins the entire continent in celebrating Africa Day with pride. The continent has advanced on many fronts especially in strengthening democracy, peace, stability and socio-economic development. Africa Day is an opportunity to celebrate African identity and heritage.

Government hosts successful centenary celebrations

Government and stakeholders have hosted a successful  centenary celebration event at the University of Fort Hare in Alice where President Zuma gave the keynote address.

The centenary alumni address was delivered by President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma also delivered a message of congratulations.

The event was attended by alumni, students, community members and dignitaries from across Southern Africa.

Acting Minister of Higher Education and Training, Thulas Nxesi  met with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare who briefed him on the state of readiness for the centenary celebrations which are planned for Friday 20 May 2016. Included in the briefing were disruptions that took place at the Alice campus of the university last evening, Wednesday 18 May 2016.

Government assures the nation that Fort Hare Centenary celebrations continue

Government assures the nation that the Fort Hare Centenary celebrations will continue as planned on 20th May at Fort Hare Campus in Alice.

Security agencies are on the ground at Fort Hare to ensure that the 100 year centenary celebrations are held in a safe and secure environment.

Students grievances are being attended to and the University of Fort Hare management has responded to the immediate demands and will attend to outstanding demands requiring longer term intervention in due course.
