Government pleased with the nation's celebration of Freedom Day

Government thanks all South Africans for the inspiring way in which we celebrated Freedom Day. This demonstration of active citizenship and patriotism displayed by countless South Africans was truly inspirational.

The profound impact of what freedom means to ordinary South Africans reverberated in the thousands of people from all walks of life who filled the Giyani Stadium in Limpopo to listen to President Jacob Zuma’s Freedom Day address.

South Africans unite in celebration of Freedom Day

Giyani is expected to be abuzz with activity tomorrow, 27 April 2016 as the country celebrates National Freedom Day.

This day serves as a platform to promote unity and a common agenda of building a united and prosperous South Africa. Government calls on all South Africans to celebrate this day by joining activities planned in their communities and hoist the South African flag high.

South Africans are socially diverse, yet are united by their love for the country and its national heritage.

Skills development for a digital future – unemployed youth in Gauteng empowered through an online video editing course, 29 Apr

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Ms Stella Ndabeni Abrahams will, on Friday, 29 April 2016, conduct a project monitoring visit of the online video editing course currently underway in Johannesburg.

The training course emanates from the Deputy Minister’s 2015 Budget Vote Speech, wherein she committed to ensure the training of, “unemployed youth, learners and teachers on Online Video Editing Software.”

1.  Implementation of key government programmes
1.1. Cabinet welcomes the achievements highlighted by President Jacob Zuma during his site visit to the Port of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, to assess progress made on the implementation of the Operation Phakisa: Oceans Economy initiative. Government has unlocked investments amounting to about R17 billion in the Oceans Economy. Since its inception, over 4 500 jobs have been created in various sectors.

Government congratulates Mathatha Tsedu for an Honorary Doctorate Degree

Government wishes to congratulate South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF), Executive Director, Mathatha Tsedu, for receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of the Western Cape. On Friday the university awarded Mr Tsedu a PhD in Arts in recognition of the role he played in efforts to transform the media in a democratic South Africa.

Government saddened by the death of ANC members in a fatal bus accident

Government is saddened at the death of ANC members who were killed in a bus accident between Winburg and Ventersburg on Sunday morning. The ANC members were on their way back from the launch of the party’s election manifesto in Port Elizabeth.

Acting Director General, Donald Liphoko, said, “Government sends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident and wishes all the injured a speedy recovery”.
