Presidency corrects distortions in the media

The Presidency has noted reports in certain media, suggesting that President Jacob Zuma insinuated that Africans were backward and that they should stop thinking like "Africans in Africa and accept that Gauteng roads were not like some national road in Malawi or Pietermaritzburg or Rustenburg.”
The words have regrettably been taken out of context and blown completely out of proportion.

Government commemorates Media Freedom Day

Government joins the country’s media industry in commemorating Media Freedom Day which resulted in legislative guarantees of press freedom and editorial independence.  On October 19, 1977, South Africa's apartheid government banned three publications and outlawed 17 anti-apartheid groups during the one-day crackdown, which came to be known as Black Wednesday.

MDDA and Sanlam to invest more to boost Local Media Awards

The Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) and Sanlam, co-sponsors and organisers of the MDDA-Sanlam Local Media Awards, have announced that they will invest more in the Awards by introducing new categories for the competition.

The new categories as well as the date for the opening of entries will be announced prior to the opening of the entries for the 2013 competition in November.

Government congratulates the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on the anticipated launch of the new 24-hour online radio station, Ubuntu Radio.

Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams said, “Government will use this innovative undertaking to raise public awareness and stimulate public discourse on South Africa's foreign policy. Ubuntu Radio will be accessible to South Africans and beyond the borders of our country, able to reach many parts of the world”.

GCIS keeps citizens in touch with government

More South Africans are receiving a wider range of information about government services, policies and plans across a broad range of communication platforms, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) annual report for 2012/13 reveals. Among other initiatives in during 2012/13 financial year, GCIS intensified its Public Participation Programme, which took various national, provincial and local leaders to communities to hear people’s views and share information about government’s plans and policies.
