Sanlam and the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA), co-sponsors and organisers of the MDDA-Sanlam Local Media Awards, have extended the deadline for submission of entries for the 2013 community journalism competition. The new deadline for entries is now Friday, 14 February 2014.

The call for entries for the Awards was issued in early December although the competition is open for work published or broadcast from 1 January to 31 December 2013.

Government welcomes the South Gauteng High Court sentencing of Mokolo Molekoa, a former member of the South African Police Force. Molekoa was sentenced to 284 years plus five life terms in jail, after being found guilty of 16 charges of rape. He was also convicted of other charges including kidnapping and robbery.

The President of the Republic, his Excellency Jacob Zuma acting in terms of Section 4 (1) (b) read with Section 8 (2) of the MDDA Act appointed Mr Roland Aloysius Williams to the MDDA Board from Jan 2014 until December 2016. The President has also thanked Ms Nadia Bulbulia and Ms Nothando Migogo whose terms of office expired in December 2013, for their invaluable contribution and dedication in promoting an environment for media development and diversity in SA.

Task Team report on security measures at Nkandla

At its meeting of 4 December 2013, Cabinet resolved to release to the public the Ministerial Task Team Report on the Security Installation at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla private residence. This media briefing is convened to give effect to that decision.

Government wishes to advise that all accredited media are granted access to the Nelson Mandela Museum in Qunu (media centre) to cover the State Funeral of President Nelson Mandela. On provision of the accreditation tags, media will be able to travel through the Police road blocks to the Museum.

Media do not have access to the family homestead and farm under any circumstance. We appeal to the media not to access these areas, as access will be strictly enforced.
