SADC ministers of gender and women’s affairs express concern on high GBV in the region

Ministers Responsible for Gender and Women's Affairs from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have expressed concern about the high prevalence of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the Region and urged Member States to develop effective and sustainable GBV prevention programmes.
This came out of the Ministers’ meeting held on 10 June 2022 in Lilongwe, Malawi, to review progress on the implementation of gender and development programmes in the Region, as well as the revised SADC Protocol on Gender and Development.

Government advocates for the protection of children during Child Protection Week

Government has noted with concern various incidents of child abuse, which have been reported on the media. These include kidnapping, bullying of children at schools and on the internet, as well as food poisoning of children, amongst others. These acts against children are unacceptable. Government calls on all South Africans to commemorate the National Child Protection Week, 29 May – 5 June 2022, to raise awareness about the rights of children as articulated in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and in the Children's Act.
Government clarifies requirements for verifiable vaccination proofs for international travellers

The South African Government has noted the recent incidents at some ports of entry involving international travellers who presented proofs of vaccination which are not defined in the current regime of health regulations.
According to current regulations regarding the incoming international travellers (Gazette No. 46319), all inbound travellers should present either a valid certificate as proof of vaccination against COVID-19. It is critical that these proofs of vaccination must be verifiable.

South Africa joins the rest of the African continent and the world in commemorating Africa Day today, 25 May 2022. Africa Day is commemorated annually, following the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU)which was created on 25 May 1963. The OAU is the precursor of the African Union. Africa Day is particularly auspicious for the continent and in particular, South Africa as it is the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the African Union, which was launched in South Africa.
