Government calls on protesters to respect the law of the country. The upsurge of violence and destruction of property associated with student protests are criminal and unwarranted. There is no space for any type of violence at any of our institutions of higher learning or anywhere else. The only purpose they serve is to undermine the genuine struggles for access to quality higher education, which are supported by government.

Government advises South African citizens to be aware of fake news websites that seek to distort and publish inaccurate information in the form of credible news.

GCIS Acting Director-General Donald Liphoko said, “South Africa has a thriving media landscape and in this digital era people have access to content wherever they go. However, the trend of satirical news websites presented as a credible news source misinforms society on key issues and prominent figures.

Yesterday, 29 September 2016 the President of the Republic of South Africa met with Ministers from the Justice, Crime Prevention & Security Cluster (JCPS) to reflect on the issue of the student’s protest for free higher education for all.

The President expressed serious concern at the escalation of violence, destruction of property and a general state of lawlessness and public disorder that has characterised the “Fees Must Fall” protests in a number of institutions of higher learning in the country.

The 2016 Heritage Month campaign themed “Celebrating our Human Treasures by Asserting our African Identity”, afforded all people an opportunity to reconnect with their unique cultural history and pride in being African.

Brand South Africa will, in partnership with the University of Pretoria, host a one-day seminar on the discipline of nation branding and how the South African Nation Brand is faring in this endevour. The dialogue will attempt to evaluate the current efforts of building a cohesive nation brand and will position South Africa as a thought leader within the academic discourse of nation-branding.
