The year’s Local Government Elections mark the 21st anniversary since the establishment of a democratic local government system in our country. It will also be the sixth time under South Africa's democratic dispensation that voters will elect leadership and public representatives at metropolitan, district and local level.

Government welcomes the start of the 2021 local government elections. Government is pleased with the millions of South Africans who have already heeded the call to cast their vote.
The vibrant atmosphere at voting stations around the nation is encouraging and we are confident that these elections will build on our history of holding regular, peaceful, and free and fair elections.

The South African Cabinet extends its well-wishes to the Class of 2021 as they commenced today with the National Senior Certificate examinations. A total of 735 677 full-time and 162 109 part-time candidates are writing their matric exams this year, which extend over six weeks from 27 October to 7 December 2021.

South African history bears testament to the need for ongoing discussions on media freedom and the realization of the critical role media plays in strengthening democracy.

His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa and His Excellency President Filipe Nyusi of the Republic of Mozambique will on Tuesday, 19 October 2021, participate in a commemorative event to mark the 35th anniversary of the passing of former President of the Republic of Mozambique, Samora Machel.
President Ramaphosa and President Nyusi are scheduled to speak at the occasion and lay wreaths.
