Cabinet yesterday (20 February) received a briefing on a request by the United Nations for SA to contribute additional personnel to the staff of the UN Peacekeeping Mission in the DRC. It was agreed to deploy an additional maximum of 25 staff officers to MONUC HQ in Kinshasa and 48 Military Police Officers to the Mission.

At its meeting today, Cabinet formally adopted decisions of the lekgotla which was held in January. These decisions will inform the content of the State of the Nation Address by President Mbeki on Friday and subsequent briefings by Ministers.

Cabinet held a 3-day lekgotla from 23 to 25 January 2002, to review implementation of government’s plans for 2001 and set out the programme for 2002. The meeting also reviewed progress made since the 1999 elections, and measures that need to be put in place further to meet the mandate of government in the coming two-and-half years.

Tata Sisulu to be accorded a special official funeral
A joint meeting of Cabinet Committees today constituted itself into a special Cabinet meeting to consider a proposal by President Thabo Mbeki with regard to National Mourning on the passing of Tata Walter Sisulu, and funeral arrangements.

Operational plan for comprehensive HIV and AIDS care and treatment
A joint sitting of the Cabinet Committees on Social and Economic Sectors today received a detailed briefing on the draft Operational Plan for Comprehensive HIV and AIDS Care and Treatment in our country. The discussion was in preparation for the Cabinet meeting which will take place next week.
