Condolences on the death of illegal miners

Government conveys its condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives during recent incidents of illegal mining.

Government has made significant progress in ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to eliminate such activities. We will continue to work with law enforcement agencies and social partners as part of a national effort to stamp out illegal mining.

Announcement on preferred site to host the Square Kilometre Array (SKA): 25 May

It is expected that an announcement regarding the preferred site for hosting the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) may be made on Friday, 25 May 2012, by the Office of the SKA Organisation, following an SKA Members' General Meeting, to be held at Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

In anticipation of this announcement, the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the SKA Project and the South African SKA Project Office have scheduled a media briefing as follows:

Government stands by its position on eNews selective coverage

Government has noted eNews’ opportunistic and disingenuous call for the retraction of the statement issued by GCIS yesterday, with regards to censoring the visuals that show the deep pain and emotion expressed by Advocate Gcina Malindi.

Government argued the censor deprived South Africans to witness the culmination of the sentiment of humiliation and denigration of the dignity of President Jacob Zuma, his office and the African culture that is shared by millions of South Africans.

Government condemns distasteful portrait of President Zuma

Government would like to express its displeasure at the offensive portrait by Brett Murray titled ”The Spear” that depicts the President of the Republic of South Africa in a disrespectful and demeaning manner at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg. 

The portrait undermines the esteem of the highest office in the land and impugns on the President’s Constitutional right to dignity. It also goes against the grain of African morality, culture and the spirit of Ubuntu as well as nation building.

South African government approaches Constitutional Court on E-toll ruling

Pursuant to the decision by Cabinet at its meeting on May 16 2012, the Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan, has applied on behalf of the South African government to the Constitutional Court of South Africa for leave to appeal against the interdict by the North Gauteng High Court stopping the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) from collecting tolls on certain roads in the Gauteng Province.

Cabinet expressed its condolences to the family of the late Minister of Public Service and Administration, Mr. Radhakrishana Lutchmana (Roy) Padayachee. It noted that a memorial service will be held in his honour on Thursday, 17 May, 2012, 11:00am at Pretoria City Hall, Visagie Street, Pretoria.
