Human trafficking is a global problem and a form of modern day slavery. It affects millions of people around the world and the majority of victims are women and children. It often results in the exploitation of girls and women mainly, as well as boys and men where victims are unable to escape from their trafficker. Victims are coerced into forced labour, sexual exploitation, servitude or slavery-like practices, removal of body parts and forced marriages.
Water is a precious resource and no one can survive without it. It is critical for our health, growing food and economic development. It is therefore crucial that we continue to protect and manage this precious resource so that we can have enough for all of us and generations to come.
Women are an integral part of communities and they are the foundation of society, therefore investing in them to accelerate progress is vital.
Just 30 years ago most women in South Africa were denied the right to vote and work. Many of the basic rights that we now take for granted were also denied to the majority of the people of this country. Many of the challenges faced by women prior to our democratic change in 1994, continue to impact women around the world today. Vast numbers of women have no voice or just simply continue to suffer in silence.
