Government acknowledges the important role that South Africans abroad played in the special voting last week thereby strengthening their bond with their compatriots at home as well as giving substance to the ruling by the Constitutional Court that South Africans abroad should have the right to vote.
As Directors-General (DGs) of the Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, (JCPS) this is our fourth provincial visit. We have come to Mpumalanga to receive reports from our provincial structures, get first hand experience of the challenges they face in the implementation of government programmes as well as note the successes they have obtained. We will also elevate these issues to the executive at national level.

Cabinet has approved the use of equitable redress as the only option for the settlement of outstanding land claims in the Kruger National Park (KNP). The Directors-General of the departments of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) and Land Affairs (DLA) jointly informed the affected community leaders of the claimants in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces on 23 January 2009 of the cabinet decision taken on 3 December 2008.
A 2010 mass mobilisation programme is unveiled by Government and the 2010 organising committee in Galeshewe, Kimberley, today 27 January 2009. The launch is part of the activities to celebrate the 500 days countdown towards the 2010 FIFA world cup.

A Government delegation led by President Kgalema Motlanthe today met a delegation from the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) in Pretoria to discuss legislation affecting the media.
The SANEF delegation was led by its Chairperson, Jovial Rantao.
President Motlanthe opened the meeting by affirming the important role of media in our society and committing government to work closely with SANEF to resolve any differences that may arise.
The Minister in The Presidency, Minister Tshabalala-Msimang, convened a high-level National Gender Machinery meeting, particularly within the context of the national anti-poverty strategy, on 25-26 October 2008 in Pretoria, South Africa.
The objective of this meeting was to further strengthen and encourage support and co-ordinated action for women’s empowerment and gender equality.

This follows the resignations of former Minister in the Presidency Dr Essop Pahad, former Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi and former deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi.
1 Why a Fifteen Year Review?
Looking ahead to the end of its mandated term, government decided in 2007 to repeat the experience of the Ten Year Review. Informed by the lessons of the first ten years and the mandate of 2004, government had devised detailed programmes to accelerate and sustain positive trends. Critically it had to enable the country to move to a faster trajectory of growth and development. The aim of the review is to assess progress and challenges since the attainment of democracy, with special focus on the past five years.
