Government on May 18 local government elections

Government reiterates a call made by Cabinet to all eligible voters to come out in large numbers on 18 May 2011, to exercise their democratic right to elect a government of their choice.

Regular, free and fair elections are a cornerstone of our democracy. Our votes on May 18 will go a long way towards entrenching South Africa as a democratic society with a legitimate government that is accountable, responsive and open.

A Parliamentary Press Gallery Association (PGA) delegation led by Joylene van Wyk and Donwald Pressly, co-chairpersons, held discussions last night, 30th May 2011, with the Cabinet Spokesperson and GCIS Chief Executive Officer, Jimmy Manyi. The parties had an engaging discussion about the process of facilitating the transparency of government's messages and facilitating balanced media coverage of government.

Government on Soweto train accident

The South African Government has learned with great sadness about the injury of hundreds of train commuters during yesterday’s (Thursday, 19 May 2011) train accident in Soweto.

We wish commuters injured in the accident a speedy recovery and express our gratitude to the Johannesburg Emergency Services for their quick response in assisting the injured.

The Railway Safety Regulator is investigation the circumstances which led to this accident and will report its findings as soon as the investigation has been concluded.

GCIS on death of Kgomotso Sebetso

The Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) has learned with shock and sadness this morning, 09 May 2011, about the sudden death of senior SABC journalist, Mr. Kgomotso Sebetso.

The GCIS sends its deepest condolences to the Sebetso family, friends and colleagues.

Mr. Sebetso, a senior journalist and a role model to younger journalists, was a profoundly dignified man and a professional. He would be greatly missed and remembered for his dedication and commitment to his work.
