Play your part by reporting crime

Government notes the release of the Governance, Public Safety and Justice Survey 2025/26 by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). While the survey indicates that many South Africans feel relatively safe in their neighbourhoods during the day, government remains deeply concerned that fewer than two in five people feel safe walking alone at night. The finding that only about 48% of households affected by housebreaking reported the crime to the South African Police Service (SAPS) is equally concerning.

 

Government urges all citizens to report crime to their nearest police station or through the appropriate SAPS reporting channels. Reporting crime is essential for enabling the police to investigate offences, deploy resources effectively, identify crime patterns, and bring perpetrators to justice. Every reported case contributes to building safer communities.

 

Communities are further encouraged to work closely with the police by participating in Community Policing Forums (CPFs), supporting neighbourhood safety initiatives, sharing credible information on criminal activity, and fostering partnerships that strengthen crime prevention. A safer South Africa requires the collective efforts of government, law enforcement, and every community.
