Government calls on all South Africans to rally behind Caster Semenya ahead of the 800m final at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Semenya crossed the line in a time of 1 minute 58.15 seconds to qualify with the fastest time from the semi-final heats.

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Ms Susan Shabangu said; “Government is rallying behind Caster and the rest of the South African participants at the Rio Games and wish them the best of luck. Caster, who is highly favoured to win gold, is an influence and role model to the girl child who has an interest in sport. Caster Semenya will definitely be one of South Africa's shining stars.”

South Africans are encouraged to maintain their positive support for Caster and all our team members in the build-up to the race on Saturday and government calls on all citizens to support Caster as she attempts to bring home the gold medal.
