Government mourns passing of former sports journalist and news editor Sello Rabothata

Government mourns the passing of legendary former sports journalist and news editor Sello Rabothata. He is known for his love of football, and formed part the team that helped coin the name Bafana Bafana for South Africa’s National Soccer Team.

His long and illustrious career included being the news editor of the Sowetan, during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and penned a book on the biography of Stix Morewa. Rabothata is the author of two books, The Rise and Fall of Solomon Stix Morewa: A Story of Vision, Power, and Tragedy in South African Football. 

Acting GCIS Director-General, Nomonde Mnukwa, said: “Rabothata was a stalwart in the sporting field. He has indeed left an indelible mark on the industry. In addition, he covered stories from the dark days of South Africa and through his work helped liberate our country. He was a champion of black solidarity and nation building.”
