Government and stakeholders have hosted a successful centenary celebration event at the University of Fort Hare in Alice where President Zuma gave the keynote address.
The centenary alumni address was delivered by President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma also delivered a message of congratulations.
The event was attended by alumni, students, community members and dignitaries from across Southern Africa.
Goverment thanks the university community as well as the security agencies for ensuring that the centenary event was successful.
On behalf of all South Africans, Government wishes the University of Fort Hare well as it embarks on the next centenary where it will continue to contribute to the intellectual advancement of the African continent.
The centenary celebrates the values and traditions that placed the University of Fort Hare at the centre of African intellectual pursuit and selfless service to her people.
Events to commemorate the university will continue until next year on the 8th of February 2017.
Once again students are urged to refrain from vandalising university property and are encouraged to embrace dialogue to resolve their demands.
Goverment remains committed to supporting universities and their students. The Department of Higher Education and Training has already started working with the University of Fort Hare management to address the issues that student have raised.
