Government has scheduled the following media briefings / activities for the week of the 5th to 11th February 2018. The activities, aligned to the National Development Plan and the Medium Term Strategic Framework, are undertaken to build a better South Africa.
On Monday, 5 February, Minister Senzeni Zokwana will be embark on an annual Back to School programme, where he will visit Magukubjane Secondary and Mashiyane Primary schools in Monsterlus, Limpopo. The Minister will motivate and give support to both scholars and teachers in preparation for the 2018 academic year.
Minister of Mineral Resources, Mosebenzi Zwane , will officially open the annual African Mining Indaba 2018 on the 5th of February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Department of Trade and Industry will also support emerging miners to showcase their products at African Mining Indaba. On the same day, Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, will deliver the keynote address at the Absa Mining Showcase, which forms part of the African Mining Indaba.
On the same day, 5 February, Minister for the Public Service and Administration Faith Muthambi, will convene a provincial consultative engagement on the Community Development Workers Programme, jointly with a briefing on the African Peer Review Mechanism second generation review process at the Ridge Hotel, Emalahleni (Witbank), Mpumalanga.
Also on Monday, 5 February at 9:30am at theTaj Hotel, No 1 Wale Street, Cape Town, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Nomaindiya Mfeketo, will deliver the opening remarks at the First Meeting of the BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas. This year South Africa officially assumed the Chairship of BRICS, and the planned meetings will set the trend for South Africa as the chair. South Africa has undertaken to closely align its Chairship of the BRICS Forum in 2018 with that of China in 2017 so as to establish maximum synergy and continuity for BRICS endeavours between the successive Summits.
Representatives from the Maryland State of the United States of America won Monday at, 5 February, pay a courtesy visit to the Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini to start implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Department of Social Development and the State of Maryland at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Pretoria.
The Department of Water and Sanitation will embark on a series of educational programmes, from Tuesday 6th to 8th of February, about water conservation and water demand management as well as sanitation issues in Eastern Cape. The improvement of water conservation, water quality and water-use efficiency is a government priority. The programmes are aimed at empowering citizens with knowledge and skills that will enable them to use water efficiently and conserve natural resources.
On Tuesday, 6 February, at 10:00am, Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams conducts a back-to-school event at the Dominican School for the Deaf in Hammanskraal, Pretoria.
On Wednesday, 7 February, Minister of Communications Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane will host a pre-State of the Nation Address cocktail event in Cape Town.
On Thursday, 8 February, Deputy Communications Minister Tandi Mahambehlala will during the course of the day visit Gugulethu as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Gugulethu.
On Thursday evening, 8 February, South Africans can witness President Jacob Zuma deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to a joint sitting of Parliament at 19:00pm. The SONA is an annual event in South Africa, in which the President of the country reports on the status of the nation and outlines Government’s plans for the year.
On Friday, 9 February at 17:30pm, the Annual Presidential Golf Challenge fundraising dinner will take place at the Century City Hotel, Cape Town.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation will host the annual Ubuntu Awards 2018 in Cape Town on Saturday, 10 February.
The year 2018 marks the centenary of the first President of the democratic South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. On Sunday, 11 February, Communications Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane marks the anniversary of the release of Nelson Mandela from prison at Drakenstein Correctional Centre, Paarl. On this historic day, Nelson Mandela was released unconditionally from prison after 27 years.
