Government activities for 5 to 11 Mar

Government has scheduled the following briefings/activities for the week of 5 – 11 March 2018. The activities, which are aligned to the National Development Plan and outlined in the Medium Term Strategic Framework 2014-2019, are undertaken to build a better South Africa.

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Elizabeth Thabethe, will on Monday, 5 March host a business expo to showcase the services and initiatives under the Enterprise Development and Support Programme in Mahikeng Convention Centre, North West Province at 8h30. The Programme is an initiative of the Department of Tourism that provides training and support for emerging and existing tourism businesses to ensure their viability and sustainability in the sector.

The Statistician-General of South Africa, Mr Risenga Maluleke, will release the Gross Domestic Product estimates for the fourth quarter of 2017 at a media briefing to be held on Tuesday, 6 March at the GCIS, Tshedimosetso House, Hatfield, Pretoria. NB: There will be a video link to Imbizo Media Centre, Parliament, Cape Town.

The Department of Telecommunications and Postal Services, will host a consultative workshop on the Electronic Communications Amendment Bill in Pretoria on 06 - 07 March. It is a continuation of the department’s preference to consult the stakeholders as it develops transformative policies which seek to modernise our society, contribute in growing the economy, prepare South Africans for active participation in the Digital Industrial Revolution and attract investment and innovation in the sector.

South Africa will co-host the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health from 7 to 9 March, in Cape Town under the theme: “Uniting the World for a Tobacco-free Generation”. Hosting the conference contributes towards addressing the National Development Plan’s goals by creating awareness and education on the harmful effects of tobacco use, and the need to intensify tobacco control measures.

On the 10 and 11 March, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), will open the Voting Registration Centres. The voting stations will be open between 08:00 am and 17:00 pm to assist new voters to register to vote, and allow registered voters who have relocated to reregister in their correct voting district and update their address details on the voters’ roll. The IEC Chairperson Glen Mashinini and Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba will also visit registration centres.
