The Department of Communications condemns the mugging of SABC’s contributing editor Vuyo Mvoko and the SABC team outside Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. The incident happened on Tuesday night just as Mvoko was about to cross live to the news studio during prime time.

Minister Faith Muthambi said, “This incident and other similar criminal activities that occur across the country impact negatively on individuals and society as a whole as well as the developmental efforts of South Africa.

Government has intensified the fight against crime to protect the rights of citizens as enshrined in the Constitution and will continue in its efforts to reduce crime to ensure that all people who live in South Africa are, and feel safe.

“Citizens are encouraged to work closely with law enforcement agencies to reduce crime levels in our communities. Recent reports on the work of government in clamping down on criminal activities with the help of the public are a clear demonstration that together we contribute towards moving South Africa forward,” said Muthambi.
