Deputy Minister Morolong to lead the Western Cape launch of the Milestones of Freedom Campaign: 10 to 11 Aug

The Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Mr Kenny Morolong, will lead the Western Cape launch of the Milestones of Freedom Campaign from 10 to 11 August 2026 in Cape Town, together with provincial and local government leadership.

 

The Western Cape leg of the campaign follows successful launches in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and Northern Cape. It forms part of government’s nationwide programme to commemorate the defining milestones of South Africa’s democratic journey.

09h00: Courtesy Visit and Wreath-Laying Ceremony in Honour of Christopher Truter

 

Deputy Minister Morolong will visit the Truter family at their home in Bonteheuwel before leading a wreath-laying ceremony at Maitland Cemetery. 

 

Christopher Truter was among the first learners from Cape Town’s coloured communities to be killed by apartheid police during the 1976 student uprisings. His death symbolised the spread of youth resistance beyond Soweto to communities across the Western Cape.

 

09h45: Courtesy Visit and Wreath-Laying Ceremony in Honour of Xolile Mosie

 

The Deputy Minister and delegation will visit the Mosie family before proceeding to Maitland Cemetery to honour Xolile Mosie, who lost his life during the 1976 student uprisings in Langa. The ceremony forms part of government’s commitment to preserving the memory of those whose sacrifices contributed to South Africa’s freedom and democracy.

 

11h00: Lighting of the symbolic Torch of Freedom at Langa Police Station.

 

12h00 | Pond Candlelight ceremony and reliving June “76. 

Government leaders will gather at Langa Secondary School for the candlelight and unveiling of the Pond in recognition of the country’s democratic milestones.

 

13h30: Door-stop Interview.

 

14h00: Keynote address by Deputy Minister Kenny Morolong during the Intergeneration conversation at Langa High School.

 

The address will reflect on significant milestones in South Africa’s democratic journey, including:

 

 • the 30th anniversary of the Constitution;

 • the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprisings;

 • the 70th anniversary of the Women’s Anti-Pass Campaign; and

 • the 60th anniversary of the forced removals from District Six.
