The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has noted media queries to various Ministers on their attendance of the Gupta family wedding last week.

In responding  to the questions on behalf of Government, the GCIS Acting CEO and Cabinet Spokesperson, Phumla Williams stated that “members of the Executive frequently interact with many South Africans and/or key stakeholders. This often involves official and social engagements.

Several Ministers were invited to attend the Gupta family wedding in their personal capacity. Some Ministers attended the wedding whilst others did not attend for various reasons as has been the case with other engagements where government Ministers were invited.

Questions were also asked to various Ministers about their involvement in the incidents that led to the unauthorized landing of the private plane at the Waterkloof Airforce Base. In this regard, Williams asserted that “on Friday, 3rd May 2013 the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster Ministers held a media briefing wherein a detailed update was given on issues surrounding the unauthorized landing of a private plane at the Waterkloof Airforce Base. At that media briefing Government undertook to initiate a seven working day investigation and report back to the general public and members of the media”.

Williams added that, “Government appeals to all media houses, journalists and opinion makers to respect the investigation period and allow due processes to be followed”.
