Government wishes to thank faith-based organisations and society at large for reflecting on the life of former President Nelson Mandela. Government also thanks the public for the decorum shown during this mourning period, and calls for the continuous display of dignity that will reflect our true national character.

Acting GCIS CEO, Phumla Williams, said, “The people of South Africa have displayed their love and have honoured the father of the nation by their conduct during this period. South Africans stand united and have displayed the spirit of ubuntu, which is the cornerstone of our democracy. The public response has reflected the emotional mood of a country whose identity is so closely linked to the father of the nation.”

“This sense of togetherness and belonging is one of the many legacies of Madiba and a demonstration that South Africa is truly a rainbow nation united in its diversity,” said Williams.

Government acknowledges the messages of love and support coming from different parts of the country and the world. We are moved by the outpouring of well wishes and the expression of support.
