Government calls for responsible driving and behaviour this Easter Weekend

17 April 2014

17 April 2014

Government wishes all South Africans a safe and happy Easter Weekend from 18 to 21 April 2014.

This is the period during which various communities of faith and holidaymakers will be travelling to different destinations for religious services or to spend time with family or loved ones.

This leads to high traffic volumes on our roads, especially national routes. Unfortunately, this has become a period during which the country experiences a high number of road accidents and loss of life.

Government therefore calls on motorists and pedestrians to take every possible measure to ensure that they abide by the law and help the nation avoid the loss of life, injury, loss of income and loss of assets that result from incidents on our roads.

Government calls on South Africans to show tolerance and care for one another as we share the roads that allow us to experience the beauty of our great country.

“This is a time for families to come together in happy celebration of or reflection on Easter; this should not be a time for families or communities to mourn the loss or attend to injury.

“Government calls on motorists to drive responsibly, to remember that driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime and to take breaks if they feel tired behind the wheel.

“Government has instructed all law enforcement agency to maintain high visibility and act against anyone transgressing the law, said Harold Maloka, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Government Communications (GCIS).

“Government also calls on South Africans to socialise responsibly and avoid the potential dangers of over-indulgence or losing control of their emotions or actions. This is also a time for us to show particular consideration for children, elderly persons and anyone who is vulnerable in our families or communities.”
