The President of the Republic, his Excellency Jacob Zuma acting in terms of Section 4 (1) (b) read with Section 8 (2) of the MDDA Act appointed Mr Roland Aloysius Williams to the MDDA Board from Jan 2014 until December 2016. The President has also thanked Ms Nadia Bulbulia and Ms Nothando Migogo whose terms of office expired in December 2013, for their invaluable contribution and dedication in promoting an environment for media development and diversity in SA.
Mr Roland Williams is a community activist who hails from Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape, where he currently serves as the Head of Communications of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. With roots deeply entrenched in community and developmental structures, being exposed and involved in this environment since the tender age of 14. Mr Williams is a fiercely loyal and passionate developmental activist. As a regular contributor to national, local and community media, the press sometimes refers to him as an incomparable, indefatigable, uncompromising "spin doctor" who is always quick to defend and propagate developmental decisions, programmes and policies of the public sector. Always well-groomed and often seen (and covered in the local media) with his wife in social circles, he is a "think-tank" who is consistently called upon to develop policies, strategies and programmes for media and governance issues as well as to manage and coordinate developmental work in Nelson Mandela Bay, especially in the media and communications arena. Mr Williams brings a wealth of knowledge in a diverse range of subjects to the MDDA Board, as a highly qualified BA Social Sciences graduate from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, and is currently reading for a Masters in Conflict Management and International Relations. A highly skilled individual with more than 25 years’ experience in management, he has made contributions to inter-alia the Local Government Transitional Act, the LGCS (Local Government Communications Strategy), the MDDA Act and various other public sector and media policy papers and long-term plans. He is currently also the editor of community publications. He serves on the COGTA/SALGA/GCIS National Communications Task Team and is the Regional Convenor of the Progressive Professionals Forum (PPF).
The MDDA welcomes Mr Williams, commit to working with and supporting him, look forward to his leadership and guidance, and wish him all the best in the quest to pursue the mandate enshrined in the MDDA Act. His diverse expertise and experience will strengthen and enhance the work of the MDDA. Mr Williams is filling a vacancy as a result of the departure of Ms Nadia Bulbulia who served and completed her full three year term. Ms Nothando Migogo was appointed with effect from the 23rd January 2013 for the unexpired term of office of a resultant vacancy which ended on the 31st December 2013.
