Government has congratulated the Spanish and Dutch national football teams for making it to the finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup after their respective victories against Germany and Uruguay.

The final takes place this Sunday, 11 July 2010, at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg.

Government spokesperson Themba Maseko said: “As the 2010 FIFA World Cup draws to a close, we call on South Africans to come out in large numbers on Sunday and bid a resounding farewell to this landmark event in our country’s history.”

Maseko added: “If there was ever a time in this tournament to hoist the flag to the highest point, the occasion of the final match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is such a moment. South Africans have every reason to feel proud of their achievements as hosts.  We urge you all to Fly the Flag on Friday 9 July 2010 in the buildup to the final match on Sunday 11 July 2010.”

Fan Fests, Fan Parks and Public Viewing Areas remain open throughout the country, and the public are urged to gather at these facilities, fly the South African flag high and mark the closing of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on a high note.
