Comprehensive social security system

15 February 2002

In his remarks at the closing of the debate on the State of the Nation Address in Parliament yesterday, 14 February 2002, President Thabo Mbeki indicated that the process of examining the overall social security system is continuing. In his own words:

"We will also focus on the issue of the completion of the work concerned with the consideration of a Comprehensive Social Security System."

This process will be informed by the report and recommendations of the Commission, which was set up by the Department of Social Development. The report is being processed by a team of Ministers, and consultations will be held during the course of the year with various stakeholders, before final recommendations are presented to Cabinet.

"These consultations will take some time", says the Minister of Social Development. "It is therefore premature for anyone to speculate on what the outcome would be, nor to create a false impression that this matter will feature in the Budget Speech by the Minister of Finance next week".
