Communications in The Presidency

28 July 2000

28 July 2000

The Office of the Presidency has noted reports in some media about the activities of its Communications Chief Directorate. Based on hearsay and unnamed sources, these reports suggest that the Head of the Section, Parks Mankahlana is to be demoted.

I wish to state categorically that such speculation is unfounded and mischievous.

The Office of the Presidency welcomes debate and criticism on the performance of all its Sections. But we believe that this should be within the bounds of decency and respect for the privacy of its staff. Some recent reports and comments on this matter appear to us to overstep the mark.

We hope that our colleagues in the media will exercise caution and ensure fairness in their treatment of rumours that have more to do with the individuals peddling them than the object of such speculation.

Parks Mankahlana is on leave, and he will resume his responsibilities in due course.
