Members of the media are invited to the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign on Monday 23 November 2009 at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

The Minster of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya and the Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Yunus Carrim (representing Minister Sicelo Shiceka), will officiate at the event.

The launch will comprise a media briefing and the lighting of the Torch of Peace.

The 16 Days of Activism campaign is a partnership between government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Faith-Based Organisations (FBOs), business, traditional leaders, state-owned enterprises (SoEs), civil society and the media to raise awareness about the abuse of women and children. The campaign aims to mobilise all sectors of society to act together against abuse and to support the victims and survivors of abuse.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign. Stakeholders will take stock of the work done in the past decade and raise further awareness about the abuse of women and children.

The launch will be attended by a number of Ministers and senior government officials as well as leaders of civil society, NGOs and FBOs.
