Government assures the nation that the Fort Hare Centenary celebrations will continue as planned on 20th May at Fort Hare Campus in Alice.

Security agencies are on the ground at Fort Hare to ensure that the 100 year centenary celebrations are held in a safe and secure environment.

Students grievances are being attended to and the University of Fort Hare management has responded to the immediate demands and will attend to outstanding demands requiring longer term intervention in due course.

Government condemns the violent protests and destruction of property. In response to yesterday’s unfortunate protest actions, a number of suspects have been arrested. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority will continue to update on further arrests and prosecution of the suspects.

The nation is encouraged to follow the centenary celebration proceedings on television and radio from 9h00am tomorrow, 20 May, as well as on social media by following @GCISMedia, @SAGovNews and @GovZA on twitter
