Workplan of the GCIS Standards Generating Body

In October 2002, the GCIS Standards Generating Body (SGB) registered eight Unit Standards in Government Communication on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Currently, the SGB is busy with the generation of Qualifications in Government Communication Practices Level 5 and Level 7.

The first workshop for the construction of the qualifications framework, including detailed purpose statements and scope of each qualification, was held on 28 February 2003. Following this workshop was a two-day seminar in which members of the SGB and interested stakeholders in communication participated. In this seminar the delegates were to agree on the qualifications types, define the outcomes, produce rough drafts of the qualifications and decide if there is a need for new Unit Standards.

The seminar came up with a workplan for the remaining six months to conclude this project. The GCIS SGB was registered in October 2000 to generate Unit Standards and Qualifications in Government Communication, and this process was meant to last three years.

The SGB has three workshops in which to develop qualifications which will be sent to the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) for public comment. While the qualifications are open for public comment, the GCIS will organise a workshop where stakeholders in communication from government, the private sector, institutes of higher learning and interest groups will be invited. The purpose will be to consolidate an input on the qualifications before it will be registered.
