Message of condolense on death of University of Johannesburg applicant's mother

10 January 2012

Government notes with concern and regret the death of an applicant’s mother during a stampede at the University of Johannesburg yesterday.

This is an unfortunate incident which we hope will be fully investigated.

Our thoughts are with the bereaved family and friends of the mother of the prospective student.

Government also notes the possibility, expressed by the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande, of so-called walk-in applications or registrations being outlawed.

The improvements in matric pass rates and the rate of qualification for university entry should be cause for celebration, not tragedy.

Government calls on candidates to take the necessary, timeous steps to secure entry to tertiary institutions and calls on such institutions to take measures to make these processes as smooth and efficient as possible for candidates.
