Media statement: Condolences to the families of John Gomomo and Bishop David Mokwena

22 January 2008

The Cabinet Lekgotla which is currently meeting at the Presidential Guest House in Pretoria, Tshwane, has conveyed condolences to the families of former President of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and Member of Parliament, John Gomomo as well as His Grace, Bishop David Nkwe, both of whom passed away today.

The Lekgotla paid tribute to both Mr. Gomomo and Bishop Nkwe, noting the outstanding contribution both played to the liberation of South Africa and its post apartheid reconstruction process.

Their passing therefore constitutes a profound loss to the people of South Africa as a whole. In this connection, the Lekgotla observed that given their commitment to a better South Africa, the passing of Johon Gomomo and His Grace, Bishop David Nkwe presents the nation both with examples of lives appropriately well spent and role models for society, especially the youth.
