Media Engagement's purpose is to provide strategic leadership and support in the government communication system by building, maintaining and improving relationships with the media. To strategically set and influence the media agenda by operating a robust, proactive and efficient Rapid Response system. To provide a communication service to members of the executive in Parliament by anticipating and managing the communication implications of Parliamentary questions thereby preserving the reputation of Government.
Responsibilities of the Chief Director include:
- being member of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) Manco, a strategising body chaired by the DG
- managing the sections in the chief directorate
- overall budget and personnel in the chief directorate
- providing strategic direction to the chief directorate.

This directorate manages ongoing media engagement support and strategic advice services to government by ensuring they are providing government information. It also ensures good working relations with the domestic media.

Parliamentary Liaison Services provides support to the DG of the GCIS in her role as the government spokesperson whilst in Cape Town. The office renders media liaison services to government departments in Parliament, monitors parliamentary processes, including Parliamentary questions and identifies communication needs. The office also provides government information to Members of Parliament, the media and the public through its Information Resource Centre.
