Media Engagement's purpose is to lead and drive interaction and communication between Government and the media. Key to its mandate is the promotion and facilitation of media’s understanding of government’s agenda to foster an environment that encourages an active and engaged citizenry, one that is well informed, knowledgeable, politically literate and confident of asserting its right to equitable service delivery.
Responsibilities of the Chief Director include:
- being member of the GCIS Manco, a strategising body chaired by the CEO
- managing the sections in the Chief Directorate
- overall budget and personnel in the Chief Directorate
- providing strategic direction to the Chief Directorate.

This Directorate manages ongoing media services to government by ensuring they are providing government information. It also ensures good working relations with the domestic media.

Parliamentary Liaison Services provides support to the GCIS CEO in his role as the government spokesperson whilst in Cape Town. The office renders media liaison services to government departments in Parliament, monitors parliamentary processes, including Parliamentary questions and identifies communication needs. The office also provides government information to Members of Parliament, the media and the Public through its Information Resource Centre.

The directorate protects, defends and maintains the image of government and that of the state by effectively managing communication implications arising from media reports. The Unit also ensures good working relations with all government communicators.
