Biography of Thokozile Modise

Thokozile Modise was born in Port Elizabeth.
Her qualifications include a Degree in Communications (University of Fort Hare, 1988) and Broadcast Management (SABC/AUSTRALIAN-AID, 1994).
Thokozile commenced her working career in economics news journalism in 1989. A long career in the broadcasting industry followed, which included among other things: Producer/ Executive Producer, SABC Africa; Commissioning Editor for SABC 2 – News and Magazine (leading and managing all magazine programmes on SABC2, including Top Billing, Pasella and the Sotho/Pedi and Afrikaans news bulletins); and Programming Coordinator for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.
In 2003, Thokozile became Managing Director of the Hope Madikane Otto Research and Consulting.
In 2006, she joined SABC3 as General Manager. Her key responsibilities included:
- providing strategic direction to SABC3 in terms of defining objectives and the development of business models to be implemented to increase audiences and revenue
- repositioning and re-launching SABC3 as a commercial TV channel while improving its competitive value.
- ensuring the production of innovative and unique programmes within the mandate prescribed by legislation, SABC editorial policies and board goals
- developing, driving and implementing a competitive strategy for SABC3 to ensure balance on both compliance to mandate and commercial viability
- identifying opportunities to increase the channel’s market share through aggressive and focused marketing, implementing consolidated schedules
- defining the requirements of SABC3’s specific marketing, branding and advertising to create strong positioning and brand identity
- guiding, managing, directing and developing a capable and efficient team of skilled people with sound business processes in place.
Thokozile was appointed Chief Director: Communication Service Agency in November 2009.
