IM&T is responsible for the establishment and support of information management and technology systems for GCIS, as well as websites and web-related products and systems for GCIS and government. It also supports GCIS in the efficient and effective use of information and communications technology.
IM&T comprises the following programmes:

IT is responsible for maintaining, supporting and providing information and communications technology for GCIS. The functions of the directorate are:
- providing IT support to all users at GCIS head office and regional offices
- providing system and LAN administration of all servers at head office and regional offices
- providing network, web and anti-virus security services at head office and regional offices
- providing for disaster recovery and planning for IT head office and regional offices
- evaluating new trends in information and communication technology (ICT) developments

The functions of SD are:
- performing systems analysis, design and development for users within GCIS
- providing direction and standards for system development within GCIS
- coordinating outsourced system development projects, and supporting the relevant outsourced systems
- providing user training on systems developed in-house
- utilising new information technology to enhance GCIS information and information-management systems.

The functions of EIR are:
- developing, maintaining and updating the SA Government Information website
- developing, maintaining and updating the SA Government Services website
- developing, maintaining and updating the GCIS website
- providing advice and support to government departments on developing, maintaining and updating of websites
- evaluating new and existing government websites on request
- contributing to the development of government web guidelines and the quality of government websites.
