Corporate Services aims to provide an efficient and effective support service to GCIS.
The Chief Director's responsibilities and functions include:
- member of the GCIS Management Committee, a strategising body chaired by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
- overseeing human resource management and labour relations
- managing the recruitment and selection process
- managing human resource maintenance practices, i.e. promotions, transfers, secondments and incentives
- managing internal communications
- managing the Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EHWP)
- managing the Information Centre
- management of overall budget and personnel in the Chief Directorate
- acting as a programme manager for the Programme: Corporate Services
- providing strategic direction to the Chief Directorate.

The aim of HR is to provide a support service to the organisation in human resource management, labour relations and internal communication. The Information Centre is also part of this directorate.
The Public Service Regulations [PDF] 665 kb allow for a great deal of decentralisation and flexibility, and place the onus on departments to develop and implement their own departmental policies derived from the national framework. This directorate develops and manages these policies.

Much emphasis is placed on ensuring dynamic communication within GCIS. The Internal Communication unit is responsible for establishing a communication-orientated culture in GCIS.
Activities include:
- Production of GCIS internal newsletter
- Facilitation of interactive communication platforms aimed at ensuring effective internal communication in GCIS
- Facilitation of processes and mediums seeking at providing report back to staff
- Conduct orientation programmes
- Conduct exit interviews
- Organising social events and the celebration of National Days
- Management of all issues relating to the Promotion of Access to Information Act
- Maintanance of the GCIS intranet
- Maintanance of the Government Internal Communicators database.

The functions of the HRM are:
- providing support to GCIS in terms of human resource management services
- supporting the recruitment and selection of staff in the organisation
- effecting the appointment of staff
- handling human resource maintenance practices, i.e. promotions, transfers, secondments and other rewards
- handling conditions of service for employees in the organisation, e.g. leave, housing allowances, medical aid, injury on duty and overtime
- acting as a facilitator in the event of grievances that could not be resolved at Directorate level
- dealing with the formal disciplinary procedure
- promoting sound labour relations within the organisation
- developing and maintaining human resource management policies
- monitoring and facilitating performance management
- overseeing the implementation of the Public Service Regulations [PDF] .

The functions of Information Centre are:
- providing a central point in government where government-related information can be obtained on request (either directly or on referral to the relevant government institution)
- identifying, selecting, acquiring and providing information and information resources according to users' needs
- disseminating information, handling enquiries and managing a current awareness service
- providing support to Government Information Centres and GCIS Information Resource Centres through the provision of information, services and value-added information products
- managing the departmental library service
- organising, catalogueing and storing all acquired government-related information as well as information products produced by GCIS, to make it accessible for retrieval and dissemination.

Sub-directorate: Training and Development
The key functions of Training and Development is to co-ordinate and implement training and development activities to ensure an integrated approach to HRD within the organisation, through the:
- Coordination and the implementation of learning programmes e.g. learnerships, internship, bursaries, skills programme (short courses) and ABET programme.
- Coordination and the implementation of Management Development Programme
- Coordinate the implementation of Massiffied Induction Programme (MIP) and the induction of new staff members
- Submission of Workplace Skills Planning,Anual Training Reports and Quaterly monitoring Reports to the relevant SETA
Sub-directorate: Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EHWP)
The key functions of EHWP are:
- taking care of employees’ wellbeing through Employee Health and Wellness Programme (EHWP), including Employees with Disabilities (EWDs)
- developing and implementing EHWP policies
- providing counselling/referals and support to employees
- providing strategic support to managers on employee wellness matters
- taking care of the needs of employees with disabilities
- forming strategic partnerships with health professionals to keep up to date with issues related to employee health and wellness.
