Biography of Ilva Mackay Langa
Ilva
Mackay Langa matriculated at Uitenhage High School in 1968 and
in 1970 she enrolled at the University of the Western Cape. However,
she did not complete her studies in librarianship as she left
in 1973 after a student strike. She joined the Evening Post/EP
Herald in Port Elizabeth where she worked as a librarian.
In
1977 she left South Africa and obtained political asylum in the
United Kingdom where she worked in the Anti-Apartheid Movement,
before joining the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU)
in 1979. From 1982 to 1987 Ilva was based in Zambia as SACTUs
co-ordinator for information and publicity, before returning to
London where she worked in the West European office until its
closure in 1990. Ms Mackay Langa then worked as a scholarship
officer at Canon Collins Educational Trust, whilst upgrading her
skills by completing courses in Computer Studies and Information
Technology and Management at Pitman Central Colleges. Ilva enrolled
at the University of North London for a Post Graduate Diploma/MA
in Information Studies, and completed her PGD in 1993.
Before
returning to South Africa in 1994 she worked as a Resource Centre
Officer at Appropriate Health Resources and Technologies Action
Group, AHRTAG in London.
Back
in South Africa she was employed as the Chief Director in the
Office of the Premier of Gauteng until 1998 when she was transferred
to the Office of the Gauteng Provincial Service Commission as
head of the office. She was appointed Chief Director Corporate
Services at GCIS in 1999.
Ilva
attended the six-week Senior Executive Programme training course
at Wits & Harvard Business School during 2001 and was appointed
Deputy Chief Executive Officer responsible for Centralised Services
in March 2002.
Ilva
has two daughters, Ntsiki and Linda.
