Ilva Mackay Langa matriculated at Uitenhage High School in 1968 and in 1970 she enrolled at the University of the Western Cape. However, she did not complete her studies in librarianship as she left in 1973 after a student strike. She joined the Evening Post/EP Herald in Port Elizabeth where she worked as a librarian.

In 1977 she left South Africa and obtained political asylum in the United Kingdom where she worked in the Anti-Apartheid Movement, before joining the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU) in 1979. From 1982 to 1987 Ilva was based in Zambia as SACTU’s co-ordinator for information and publicity, before returning to London where she worked in the West European office until its closure in 1990. Ms Mackay Langa then worked as a scholarship officer at Canon Collins Educational Trust, whilst upgrading her skills by completing courses in Computer Studies and Information Technology and Management at Pitman Central Colleges. Ilva enrolled at the University of North London for a Post Graduate Diploma/MA in Information Studies, and completed her PGD in 1993.

Before returning to South Africa in 1994 she worked as a Resource Centre Officer at Appropriate Health Resources and Technologies Action Group, AHRTAG in London.

Back in South Africa she was employed as the Chief Director in the Office of the Premier of Gauteng until 1998 when she was transferred to the Office of the Gauteng Provincial Service Commission as head of the office. She was appointed Chief Director Corporate Services at GCIS in 1999.

Ilva attended the six-week Senior Executive Programme training course at Wits & Harvard Business School during 2001 and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer responsible for Centralised Services in March 2002.

Ilva has two daughters, Ntsiki and Linda.
