The chief directorate
provides a range of production services for government communication,
aiming to develop:
- and implement
marketing, public relations, media placement and distribution strategies for GCIS
and government
- broadcast strategies for inclusion in campaign and project communication plans
- content
for information products produced
in government for the South African public, such as the South Africa Yearbook
- information
products that meet the communication needs of government and the
information needs of the South African public.
The CSA also produces video and radio programmes, does graphic and exhibition design, and provides photographic services.
Besides its
day-to-day functions, the CSA plays a major role in projects such
as the transformation
of the marketing and advertising industry and implementing a corporate
identity for government.

The directorate is responsible for:
- developing
a content strategy and key messages for government information
products
- briefing
and managing the development of content, including editing, proofreading and translations
- producing
the SA Yearbook, the Pocket Guide to South
Africa and an interactive CD-ROM

media bulk-buying for government departments
- managing a panel of communication specialists for the outsourcing of advertising, public relations, event management and production
- contract management between suppliers and government
- managing government's corporate identity.

The functions
of the directorate include the following:
- The
video unit
- provides live broadcast services
- provides a production
service for video programmes to government clients
- provides duplication facilities
- sells archival material/stock footage from all films and videos
produced by GCIS or on which GCIS holds the copyright.
- The
radio unit provides a production service for developing radio
programmes for government clients.
- The Subdirectorate:
Photography provides a full production service of photographs
to government clients and sells official portrait photographs
of the South African Government to the public and government clients. It is the official custodian of government imagery.
- The Subdirectorate:
Design provides a production service for graphic design and exhibitions
to government clients.
