The Director-General (DG) is the Accounting Officer as prescribed by the Public Finance Management Act of 1999 responsible for the GCIS’ establishment. The DG provides strategic leadership and coordination of government communications. Functions include:
- providing strategic leadership of corporate support services
- providing strategic leadership of Content Processing and Dissemination
- providing strategic leadership of Intergovernmental Coordination and Stakeholder Management
- providing strategic leadership of integrated financial management services
- providing strategic leadership of internal audit services
- providing strategic leadership of Governance, Risk and Integrity Management.

The Directorate provides suport services to the Chief Directorate within the office of the DG. The functions of Director-General Support Services include:
- Managing administrative support services in the office of the Director-General and external stakeholders
- Managing and summarising the content of Cabinet memos and drafting of Cabinet statements
- Managing coordination of MANCO and EXCO meetings chaired by the Dlrector-General
- Managing the providsion of executive secretarial services to the Director-General.
